Job Overview

The Associate Mortgage Underwriter supports the underwriting and credit decision process by reviewing documentation, applying due diligence, and ensuring compliance with internal and regulatory guidelines. The role escalates inaccuracies and incomplete documentation that could present risk to the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with mortgage brokers to build loyalty to the Company.
  • Maintain relationships with external partners such as mortgage insurers, appraisers, title insurance companies, and solicitors.
  • Interact with mortgage brokers for the collection of all required documents to satisfy mortgage commitment conditions.
  • Review and verify the accuracy of required documentation related to income, down payment, and the property using sound due diligence and in compliance with internal and regulatory guidelines prior to signing off on any mortgage conditions or documents.
  • Escalate any documentation issues to the Underwriter for review and sign off.
  • Document clear and complete notes within the mortgage underwriting system.
  • Respond to all inquiries within established turnaround times.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures to ensure AML requirements are met.

Working Environment and Physical Demands

  • Office environment.
  • Periods of high volume with tight timelines.
  • Long periods of stationary position/sitting.
  • Prolonged repetitive movement (using keyboard and mouse).
  • Long periods of time viewing a computer screen.
  • Multi‑tasking may include speaking to customers on a telephone call while looking up information on a computer program.

Education / Certification / Experience Requirements

  • Completed post‑secondary education or equivalent work experience required.
  • Previous experience within the Financial Services sector preferred.
  • Previous experience within the Mortgage industry an asset.
  • Completion of the Mortgage Agent Course and/or BC Financial Services Authority (“BCFSA”) license an asset.
  • Working knowledge of PC software in a Windows environment required.

In accordance with the BC Financial Services Authority (“BCFSA”), if a successful candidate is not already licensed, upon starting with First National, they will be registered for the applicable educational courses and upon successful completion of the exam, First National will register them with BCFSA to complete the licensing process.
