Position: Mapping Technician (PWU)

Position Purpose

This position reports to the Supervisor, Records & Mapping Services, and is responsible for maintaining and distributing utility operations/corporate records. The incumbent will update the Geographic information System (GIS) electrical network, landbase data, produce reports and assist in the creation of maps. They assure security and integrity of Alectra’s GIS and various Engineering/corporate records.

Key Responsibilities /Accountabilities

  • Interface to the Control Room and field crews to expedite the incorporation of Change Requests (CR’s), emergency work orders, and energization requests into the GIS system.
  • Analyze and resolve issues related to OMS feeders and prepare required reports.
  • Support the Distribution Design and Operations teams by checking and entering construction drawing information into GIS and revising signed‑off drawings based on mark‑ups generated by the field Supervisors and Inspectors.
  • Monitor, organize and prepare data prior to posting/updating – liaise with multiple work groups/organizations and inputs from multiple information sources.
  • Perform training and instruction for Mapping Technicians, Co‑op Students and users accessing GIS.
  • Provide field verification of all discrepancies found between the GIS records and paper records to ensure the GIS system reflects the proper information.
  • Act as a technical resource in assisting users to resolve problems regarding specialized and dedicated technology systems or advising external service providers when required.
  • Assist the GIS/OMS Operations Support Group with the development and implementation of all specialized computer applications required to support the Distribution Design and Operations areas.
  • Coordinate the management of the Joint‑Use attachments including adding/editing records in GIS and various record systems with the Joint‑Use team.
  • Assemble and record inspection remarks, construction remarks and other relevant data that requires change to GIS.
  • Maintain and update basic landbase data and datasets from service providers.
  • Generate data reports of GIS data as required by internal and external customers.
  • Conduct communication with other departments to clarify and ensure accuracy of information to be input into GIS.
  • Responsible to be aware of departmental procedures and any changes to them.
  • Monitor and audit streetlight count on a daily basis and assist the Street lighting Department in bill compilation for the municipalities.
  • Processing of ad‑hoc data requests and updates, transformer and switch information updates.
  • Securing, maintaining, publishing, and monitoring activities associated with GIS master data, ERP network distribution equipment data, customer data, and Network Records reference files/data.
  • Recommend design changes and enhancements to the GIS and other Records systems as required.
  • Responsible for a working knowledge and understanding of and make all efforts reasonable to work in accordance with and ensuring work is done in compliance with the appropriate safety legislation, EUSR rules, Alectra policies and procedures and safe work practices that apply to the work while adhering to the internal responsibility system. Reports any unsafe conditions or observed unsafe work practices using Alectra procedures.
  • The incumbent may be asked to perform other related duties which may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Competencies Education & Specialized Knowledge

  • Minimum of a 2‑Year Technician Graduate in an electrical discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years related experience with GIS and Electrical Utility experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical distribution networks.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GIS systems.
  • Proficiency in the use of CAD software.
  • Requires a combination of AUTOCAD and ARC GIS software skills.
  • A sound working knowledge of electrical utility drafting, standards and processes. Proficiency in Windows-based office applications including Excel, Word as well as 2D CAD software programs (Micro Station).
